Initially, I had limited knowledge about Gothic Architecture but through research, I learnt that it is one of the most influential styles. The aesthetic of this style was mostly influenced by French architecture but it can also be found in other European countries. I find it ironic as gothic inspired buildings are often portrayed to represent the idea of horror but the style in real life is adapted in to churches and cathedrals.
Gothic Architecture is formed by different characteristics.
Most of the time, Gothic Architecture can be identified as they have very large stained-glass windows. These windows are meticulously cut, and they have different colored glass creating a bright interior. In addition, these stained-glass windows also feature tracery, a decorative type of stone support, and detailed scenes from Biblical stories.

In addition, the most frequent feature that can be seen from pictures of many gothic churches and cathedrals is that they often have pointed arches. Perhaps the reason being is to create the idea of importance and a hierarchy.
Furthermore, for these other characteristics of gothic architecture to come into fruition, a new method of structural support must be utilised. In most cases, architects use rib vaulting. Rib vaulting is the idea of using intersecting barrel vaults-arches placed parallel to one another to support a rounded roof.

Architects also use a method called flying buttresses. Usually found externally, these projecting stone structures reinforce the buildings by redistributing the load to a more solid level.

The building’s overall aesthetic is further supported by sculptures and statues.
I hope that after reading this, Gothic Architecture is seen as something beautiful rather than something horrific which seems to be the normal perception.
